About This Position

The Security Operations Center (SOC) Officer plays a key role in ensuring the safety and security of City facilities. This position is responsible for monitoring access control systems, CCTV, and alarms, responding to incidents, and serving as the central point of contact during each shift. The SOC Officer coordinates with law enforcement, dispatches response teams, documents incidents, and provides guidance and training to security personnel. Ideal candidates will have experience in security monitoring, incident management, and customer service, with the ability to remain calm and effective in high-pressure situations and emergency events.

Job Description:

Purpose:

This position monitors a variety of security technologies including access control, video surveillance, and alarm systems to provide security services for all properties and act as shift point of contact by providing training, technical guidance, or support during security-related incidents.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  • Oversees security and access control procedures for all security posts and acts as point of contact to ensure the safety and security of all properties.
  • Monitors a wide network of security alarms and cameras, responds to alarms, and investigates and resolves threats.
  • Serves as primary center contact, disseminating information regarding security-related incidents to management and the security team and providing technical guidance or support.
  • Identifies and notifies management of vacant security posts.
  • Provides direction and training to site officers and contract employees as needed to accomplish service goals.
  • Monitors welfare of security personnel working after-hours and remote assignments.
  • Provides periodic reports to management regarding site activities, irregularities, and identifying needed action.
  • Maintains the security and confidentially of sensitive security information.
  • Assists various law enforcement agencies, provides customer service, investigates complaints, and provides recommendations for resolution of complaints.

  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of City practices, policies, and procedures.

  • Ability to document incidents in Microsoft Word.
  • Ability to quickly recognize and analyze irregular events.
  • Ability to utilize radio equipment, complying with Federal communication guidelines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with City employees and the public.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with the Security team and law enforcement during stressful situations.
  • Ability to work during emergencies or bad weather.
  • Ability to participate in on-call program and work both scheduled and unscheduled overtime.
  • Ability to work varying shifts that include weekends, holidays and possible 12-hour day.
  • Ability to climb stairs, walk for extended periods of time, and perform foot patrol.
  • Ability to meet and maintain driver eligibility standards detailed in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program.


Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus two (2) years of experience providing security services in Security Operation Center.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

Valid Texas Class C Driver License

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with CCTV, access control, security software, computers, and 2-way radios for monitoring, communication, and incident management.
  • Familiarity with a range of security software for tracking, reporting, and managing incidents.
  • Experience in dispatching response teams for incidents, accidents, and medical emergencies, ensuring timely and efficient coordination.


Notes to Candidate:

- Potential Shifts: 6:00 AM - 2:00 PM/ 2:00 PM - 10:00 PM/ 10:00 PM - 6:00 AM
- Shifts may include 1-2 weekend days
- Work hours may include after-hours, holidays, and overtime may be required with or without notice.
- Work shift may change according to departmental business needs.
- This position may require on-call or call-back responsibilities.

- Salary Range : $25.22 - $29.70hour

Driving Requirement (if applicable):

  • This position may require a valid Texas Class C Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one by your hire date.


  • External New Hires must meet the City of Austin's Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite . To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.


Travel:

  • If you are selected for this position, and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program , you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.


Essential/Critical Employee Designation:

  • Some positions are designated as Critical or Essential . Employees in these roles are required to report to work during emergencies or when operations are modified . This may include working from a designated site or an alternative work location.


Work Conditions:

  • Work hours may vary based on operational needs and may include evenings, weekends, holidays, or on-call assignments.


  • Must have the ability to read, write and speak English fluently.


  • A skills assessment may be required as part of the hiring process.


Veteran Preference:

  • Veteran candidates must provide a copy of their DD-214 at the interview to receive the veteran’s preference.
